Court Further Clarifies Marilyn Monroe Rights Issues

As a result, owners of these iconic image libraries are now free to work directly with licensees to tap these libraries, including many new images of Monroe never before available for licensing. These Monroe libraries have now been gathered together under one roof at the newly formed company Legends Licensing, LLC (www.legendslicensing.com).

The Monroe photographic libraries will be marketed through the Legends Licensing division, Marilyn Monroe Licensing Group. The group currently includes three prominent photography libraries -- the Tom Kelley Collection, including Kelley’s iconic early nudes known as The Red Velvet Collection™, the Milton H. Greene Collection, and the Harold Lloyd Collection. More Monroe image libraries are expected to be added in the near future. Legends Licensing also represents the libraries of other celebrities and public figures.

For many years, access to the images of Marilyn Monroe, which are now available through Legends Licensing, had been restricted by CMG Worldwide, Inc. (CMG), a licensing agency, and Marilyn Monroe, LLC (MMLLC), a company claiming to own Marilyn Monroe’s Right of Publicity. On March 17, 2008, United States District Court, Central District of California, set the libraries free from the yoke of CMG and MMLLC’s control. The Court held that CMG and MMLLC do not own the Right of Publicity for Marilyn Monroe. Judge Margaret M. Morrow ruled that MMLLC had been playing “fast and loose with the courts” simply to benefit from a recently passed California law granting rights of publicity to a celebrity’s estate. CMG and MMLLC could not now claim Monroe was domiciled in California, after having asserted for nearly 40 years that Monroe was domiciled in New York in order to avoid paying California estate taxes.

Here’s a news flash - things don’t work out so well when you get involved with the mob.

Yet screenwriters can’t seem to stop themselves from spinning gangster tales. There’s nothing particularly new about “Wisegal,” premiering tonight at 9 on Lifetime.

Alyssa Milano stars as Patty Montanari, a widowed mother of two young boys. Unable to pay her bills, Patty begins working for the Mafia - first by selling tax-free cigarettes, then by turning a failing mob-owned restaurant into a successful nightclub.

Along the way, she falls for married gangster Frank Russo (Jason Gedrick). Mob boss Salvatore Palmeri (James Caan) makes Patty a promise - he will provide for her family forever if she transports a half-million dollars across the Canadian border.

Even though “Wisegal” is based on a true story, any savvy TV viewer could write what happens next. Heck, anyone who caught 15 minutes of any “Sopranos” episode can forecast how this story will unfold.

And writer Shelley Evans seems to know that. Her script often skips key points of exposition. Without explanation, Frank’s son Mouse (Zak Longo) is involved in drugs and this is a huge problem for the mob. Suddenly Frank is a violent threat to Patty and her family.

It may be predictable, but the movie is backed by creditability. Joseph Pistone, the real-life FBI agent who inflitrated the mob as Donnie Brasco, and Anthony Melchiorri, Patty’s real-life son, are executive producers. Melchiorri pays homage to his mother but doesn’t justify her actions. “These people helped me. I made them my family. I knew what I was doing,” Patty tells an FBI agent.

After shelling out on two pricey stints in rehab, and her disastrous performances at the box office, the actress, 21, is now worried she is not as flush with cash as she used to be.

“Lindsay has had a reality check — she’s not getting offers like she used to,” said one film industry insider. “She’s definitely thinking she needs a big blockbuster just so she can go back to living comfortably.”

The actress — whose most notable role was in the 2004 film ‘Mean Girls’ — has reportedly blown more than $315,000 on rehab stays and more than $1 million on hotels. Lindsay, for a time, was living in a $2,700/night suite at the Chateau Marmot.

Although Lohan’s rep denies the starlet’s cash situation and spending — Lindsay is believed to have spent a whopping $70,000 on fake tan alone.

In a bid to raise some extra cash, Lohan recently revealed that she plans to start her own range of designer leggings. She said: “It will be a while before it comes out, but I’m going to do it. Some of them will have prints and some will have patterns. I love leggings.”

I'm going to go on record right now and say that the current venue that Pro Wrestling Guerrilla is running in Reseda is by FAR the worst venue they have ever had. I hate the Reseda American Legion Hall like Vince Russo hates logic…and Canadians. It's true. There are several reasons why this venue sucks, chief among them are the tiny size of the venue, the general Gestapo attitude of the people that run it including a crazy ass, drunken, and creepy old man, and the fact that the crowd seems to be more drunk and more idiotic than in any other venue. I have never been frisked before entering a wrestling show before and I'm still not sure what the point of it was. What's worse is that the venue constantly tries to ply the crowd with more and more alcohol as the show progresses. I know that this is going to be a very unpopular thing to say, but to be honest I think wrestling and alcohol go together about as well as Keira Knightly and a meal. There are these "unwritten rules" all around wrestling but is there really such a thing as "good wrestling fan etiquette"?

Clearly there are very different categories of fans depending on where you are and what you watch. When you watch AAA or CMLL it is clear that the lucha fans react in a much different way than the puro fans do in Japan. The fans on Monday Night RAW have a different reaction than your average RoHbot. Even within the same group of fans you have different reactions and attitudes based on where the market is. The Mid-South, New York, LA, Canada, pretty much anywhere that the WWE runs they get a slightly different reaction to the product and the wrestlers. I say "slightly", but if you've ever seen the shows in Madison Square Garden, Philly, or Montreal you know that the term "slightly" is fully up for interpretation. It's like saying, "Yeah, that chick had a slightly glass eye...but if you've never had a ‘socket job' before...whoa boy". I'm not going to go over the differences in fan reactions and attitudes because...I believe I've done that column before. The real question is whether there truly is a "proper" way to act at a wrestling show. Is it the Japanese who are politely quiet as a show of "respect" to the wrestlers, the raucous (read: drunk) fans in Mexico who have been known to throw food, beer bottles, and small children into the ring when they don't care for the rudos's tactics, even being known to riot at times, or maybe your average CZW crowd... yep, both guys. Clearly sitting on your hands like they do in Japan wouldn't work in the US because wrestlers here really rely on the crowd participation and reaction. But I can't imagine that anyone wants to deal with a couple dozen people blowing horns all night long and throwing their churros at the wrestlers. There has to be a happy medium.

MACC Lady Greyhounds beat CMU jayvee, Hounds lose again

MACC Lady Greyhounds mounted themselves an 11-2 lead on a bucket by Kristen Williams shortly before the 15-minute mark, and easily put away the women’Äôs jayvee team from Central Methodist University of Fayette winning 70-37 at home Wednesday.

The non-region game hosted at the Fitzsimmons-John Arena was never close. By halftime Moberly’Äôs lead swelled to 35-13 and when Williams scored off the glass with 18:51 remaining in the game, the Lady Greyhounds scored all the points they would need for victory having a 39-15 lead.

’ÄúWe were more athletic and the girls got after it hard to open the game, playing with good intensity throughout the first half. I was pretty pleased with that,’Äù said MACC women’Äôs coach Katie Vaske on Thursday morning. ’ÄúWe received good play from the bench. The girls rotated around very well and got into a good flow. We were able to try out a new offensive set in this game, which we needed to practice with against someone other than ourselves and this game helped us work on it.’Äù
Williams netted a game-high 16 points to pace Moberly (12-8). Brea Banks and Nneka Nwani tossed in 15 and 10 points respectively for the cause, and Briana Mitchell added nine. Also scoring for the Lady Greyhounds was LaTashia Pratt with six points, Cameo Holly and Brittany Noel had four each.

MACC women made 5 of 10 free throws in the game, and Central Methodist was 3 of 6.

The lady Eagles were led in scoring by Kelly Heater with seven points. Amber Bush and Emily Ringin had six apiece.

Men’Äôs Game

The Warriors of Indian Hills Community College, Ia. went on the warpath early in the second half with a 12-1 run and also put together a 21-9 spurt later en route to a 65-52 victory over Moberly Area Community College Wednesday during men’Äôs basketball non-region action hosted here.

MACC let Indian Hills scored the last five points of the half and clung to a 28-27 lead at the break. The Warriors carried that momentum to open the second half and were effective keeping the Greyhounds away from the glass, second chance shots during the final 20 minutes of play became plentiful, allowing Indian Hills to sweep the season series with the Hounds after already picking up a 65-52 victory during the first semester on its home floor at Ottumwa, Ia.

’ÄúThe score was close, going back and forth pretty much for most of the game until there was about 7 minutes left in the game when we had a dry spell scoring points. Indian Hills had a couple of nice runs on us and that was the difference,’Äù said MACC assistant men’Äôs coach Larry Mendez on Thursday morning.

Dwight Buycks scored 21 points for Indian Hills (16-5), and LaRon Dendy had 12.

It was the sixth straight loss by the MACC Greyhounds (10-11). Chris Allen led Moberly in scoring with 17 points; both Chad Thompson and Jasmine Rogers had 10. Also scoring for the Hounds was Dennis Jones with five points, Avery Percival had four, Eric Jones and Dale Beasley each made a free throw.

Moberly made 6 of 10 free throws in the game, and Indian Hills went 10-for-20.

The Greyhounds return to Region 16 action Saturday making a trip to Poplar Bluff facing the Raiders in a women’Äôs/men’Äôs double header. Three Rivers Community College defeated MACC 69-67 in overtime here on Jan. 11.

"After the talk show started, and I had Top Model at the same time, it engulfed me so much that it dulled my maternal instinct," the 34-year-old retired supermodel says.

The host of her self-titled talk show host and America's Next Top Model says that she has not yet completely abandoned the thought of raising her own family. "I hope that when I get more of a handle on my life it comes back."

And although she says she couldn't complain of her life, she still feels certain longing. "I'd go to work and women would be crying in my arms on the talk show. But then I'd go home and put my key in my door and... nothing, no friends, no husband, no children. I feel so full when I'm at work but so empty when I come home."

Banks is the first African-American woman to grace the covers of Sports Illustrated magazine swimsuit issue. She's also one of only four African-Americans to have repeatedly rank Time magazine's list of the world's most influential people. She's currently developing shows for Warner Bros. and with Ashton Kutcher.
